After having been released from prison early, in April 2020, Hernandez released his first single after his prison sentence on May 8, 2020, titled “Gooba“. On May 17, 2020, he announced that he would take a short hiatus from social media and release a video the following Friday. He also promised a new song set to be released on May 22 if “Gooba” got 10,000 downloads. However, the scheduled release was subsequently postponed to May 29.

On May 23, he asked his fans to come up with the song title of his upcoming single, which turned out to be “Trollz“. Shortly thereafter, Hernandez posted a video of himself confirming the title. The rapper further revealed that the song features another artist. On June 3, 6ix9ine announced the song was again delayed to June 12, stating it is “out of respect for what we are going through right now”.

Nicki Minaj was suspected and rumored to be on the song, after reportedly visiting 6ix9ine to film the music video in May 2020. On June 10, 2020, it was confirmed that Minaj is the previously announced guest artist via the official merchandise website of the song.

6ix9ine will release his second comeback track, “Trollz” featuring Nicki Minaj, on Friday (June 12).

Early Wednesday morning (June 10), Minaj confirmed the collaboration on Instagram. Along with her announcement, she revealed her and 6ix9ine’s plans to aid in the bailing process. “A portion of the proceeds from #Trollz including merch items, will be going directly to The Bail Project Inc,” she wrote in her post.

“The fund provides free bail assistance to low-income individuals who can’t afford to pay bail while awaiting their trial. We want to protect and support the thousands of brave people working on the front lines of social justice, using their voices to demand AN END to the targeting and killing of Black Americans by the police. #BlackLivesMatter link in bio to Pre-save #TrollzVIDEO tmrw @ midnight.”

6ix9ine and Minaj previously connected on the Hot 100 heater “Fefe,” which stormed to No. 3 on the chart.

Last month, Minaj sealed her first Hot 100 No. 1 when she paired up with Doja Cat for “Say So (Remix).” As for 6ix9ine, he found chart success upon his April release from jail when he released “Gooba.” The record soared to No. 3, tying his solo career best for the New York rapper.

6ix9ine and Nicki Minaj TROLLZ Gif is the second single from rapper 6ix9ine since he was released from prison early because of fears about the risk the COVID-19 pandemic could pose on his health. It also marks his third collaboration with female emcee and rap veteran Nicki Minaj.

6ix9ine first mentioned the track on Instagram on May 23rd 2020, when he claimed the most liked comment would be the name of the song. This turned out to be his own suggestion of the decided name “TROLLZ.”

In support of the black community and the protests that broke out due to the killing of George Floyd – on May 25th, the release date was pushed back to June 12th. 6ix9ine stated this was “out of respect for what we are going through right now.”

Finally, on June 10th, after many rumours and much anticipation building (including 6ix9ine telling fans they could visit his house if they guessed the feature right) – Nicki Minaj provided long-awaited confirmation that she was the featured artist by posting two pictures of herself and 6ix9ine to her Instagram. Her caption read:

A portion of the proceeds from #Trollz including merch items, will be going directly to The Bail Project Inc. The fund provides free bail assistance to low-income individuals who can’t afford to pay bail while awaiting their trial. We want to protect and support the thousands of brave people working on the front lines of social justice, using their voices to demand AN END to the targeting and killing of Black Americans by the police.
