Ice Cream (Blackpink – Selena Gomez) Description

Ice Cream” is a song by South Korean girl group Blackpink and American singer Selena Gomez. It was released on August 28, 2020, as the second single of Blackpink’s upcoming debut Korean-language studio album, The Album.

Background and release

On July 23, 2020, YG Entertainment released a teaser poster for a new collaboration single between Blackpink and an unnamed artist, set to be released in August. On July 28, the band announced their first Korean studio album, The Album, would be released on October 2, 2020. On August 11, 2020, the unnamed artist was revealed to be American singer Selena Gomez. On August 21, 2020, it was revealed that the title of the collaboration would be “Ice Cream”.

On August 24, a teaser video featuring Blackpink and Gomez on video call together while the song played in the background was released. Teaser photos of Blackpink and Gomez were released from August 24 to August 26. The teaser photo of Blackpink member Jisoo was released on August 24, photos of members Jennie and Rosé were released on August 25, and photos of Lisa as well as Gomez were released on August 26. The song and accompanying music video were released on August 28.

Composition

“Ice Cream” is an electropop and bubblegum pop song with elements of trap. The song is written in the key of E major with a tempo of 80 beats per minute, while Blackpink and Selena Gomez’s vocal ranges span from B3 and E5. Lyrically, the song includes a number of ice cream-related double entendres and sexual metaphors. Hugh McIntyre of Forbes described some of the lyrics, such as “Brr brr, frozen, you’re the one been chosen / Play the part like Moses, keep it fresh like roses”, as “upbeat nonsense”.

Ice Cream Music video

The music video for “Ice Cream” was preceded by an 18-second long teaser clip released on August 27 on the group’s official YouTube channel. The actual music video was released a day later, on August 28. It garnered 79.08 million views in its first 24 hours, marking the third biggest 24-hour debut for a music video on the platform, and a second personal best for the group behind their June 2020 single “How You Like That”, which received 86.3 million views in its first 24 hours. A behind-the-scenes video of the music video filming was published on August 29. Blackpink’s scenes were filmed in South Korea, while the scenes featuring Gomez were filmed separately in the US due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Synopsis

The video opens with Gomez in a candy-striped crop top, driving a pastel-colored “Selpink” ice cream truck (the logo a combination of Gomez and the group’s names) and giving out Serendipity ice cream. The members of Blackpink appear next on-screen, popping up smiling behind ice-cream shaped cardboard cutouts. Gomez changes outfits several times throughout the video, appearing in a floral dress with puffy sleeves, a Puma romper with a green visor, and a yellow plaid off-the-shoulder dress.

The members of Blackpink appear in a variety of colorful, “maximalist” sets, including an ice cream parlor, a basketball court, a tennis court, and a room with blow-up slides and ice cream cones. A capybara also appears briefly in the video, eating a carrot with Jennie.

Performance video

On September 2, an animated dance performance version of the music video was released via the group’s YouTube channel. In it, Blackpink and Gomez appear as 3-D ZEPETO avatars dressed in outfits similar to those worn in the original music video, and virtually team up to perform a dance routine to the song, that also included parts of the original choreography, while surrounded by “suspended ice cream cones” and other related imagery.

Commercial performance

In its opening day, “Ice-Cream” debuted in the top five on both the United States and Global Spotify charts, and at number three on the all-genre United States iTunes sales chart, while also receiving substantial airplay on pop and adult contemporary radio stations. The song debuted at number two on Billboard‘s Digital Songs chart (directly beneath BTS’s “Dynamite”), having sold over 23,000 digital copies in its first week of tracking.

In the United Kingdom, “Ice-Cream” debuted at number 39, giving Blackpink their fifth top 40 single in the UK and making them the Korean act with the most top 40 singles in UK chart history, surpassing BTS.

Ice Cream (Blackpink – Selena Gomez) Lyrics

[Verse 1: Selena Gomez, Lisa, Jennie]
Come a little closer ’cause you lookin’ thirsty
I’ma make it better, sip it like a Slurpee
Snow cone chilly, get it free like Willy (Oh)
In the jeans like Billie, you be poppin’ like a wheelie

Even in the sun, you know I keep it icyYou could take a lick, but it’s too cold to bite me (Haha)
Brr, brr, frozen, you’re the one been chosen
Play the part like Moses, keep it fresh like roses (Oh)

[Chorus: Rosé, Selena Gomez,Jennie]
Look so good, yeah, look so sweet (Hey)
Lookin’ good enough to eat
Coldest with the kiss, so he call me ice cream
Catch me in the fridge, right where the ice be

Look so good, yeah, look so sweet (Hey)
Baby, you deserve a treat
Diamonds on my wrist, so he call me ice cream
You could double-dip ’cause I know you like me

[Post-Chorus: Jennie]
Ice cream chillin’, chillin’, ice cream chillin’
Ice cream chillin’, chillin’, ice cream chillin’

[Verse 2: Selena Gomez, Rosé,Jisoo, Jennie]
I know that my heart can be so cold
But I’m sweet for you, come put me in a cone (In a cone)
You’re the only touch, yeah, that get me meltin’
He’s my favorite flavor, always gonna pick him

You’re the cherry piece, just stay on top of me, so
I can’t see nobody else for me, no
Get it, flip it, scoop it, do it like that, oh yeah, oh yeah
Like it, love it, lick it, do it like la-la-la, oh yeah

[Chorus: Rosé, Selena Gomez,Jennie]
Look so good, yeah, look so sweet (Hey)
Lookin’ good enough to eat
Coldest with the kiss, so he call me ice cream
Catch me in the fridge, right where the ice be

Look so good, yeah, look so sweet (Hey)
Baby, you deserve a treat
Diamonds on my wrist, so he call me ice cream
You could double-dip ’cause I know you like me

[Post-Chorus: Jisoo]
Ice cream chillin’, chillin’, ice-cream chillin’
Ice cream chillin’, chillin’, ice cream chillin’
Ice cream chillin’, chillin’, ice-cream chillin’
Ice cream chillin’, chillin’, ice-cream

[Verse 3: Lisa]
Chillin’ like a villain, yeah, ra-ra-ra
미친 미친듯한 속도 in my La Ferra’
너무 빨러 너는 삐끗 원한다면 그냥 지름
Millis, billis 매일 벌음 한여름 손목에 얼음
Keep it movin’ like my lease up
Think you fly, boy, where your visa?
Mona Lisa kinda Lisa
Needs an ice-cream man that treats her
Keep it movin’ like my lease up
Think you fly, boy, where your visa?
Mona Lisa kinda Lisa
Needs an ice cream man that treats her (Hey)

[Outro: All, Jennie]
Na, na-na-na-na
Na, na-na-na-na (Hey)
Ice on my wrist, yeah, I like it like this
Get the bag with the cream
If you know what I mean
Ice-cream, ice-cream, ice cream chillin’
Na, na-na-na-na
Na, na-na-na-na (Hey)
Ice on my wrist, yeah, I like it like this
And I’m nice with the cream
If you know what I mean
Ice-cream, ice-cream
Ice cream
