Kings & Queens Ava Max

Kings & Queens Ava Max Description

Kings & Queens Ava Max is a song by American singer Ava Max, released as the lead single from her upcoming debut studio album on March 12, 2020, through Atlantic Records. It is the second single to be released from the album, following the release of “Sweet but Psycho” in 2018.

Kings & Queens Ava Max initially went through ten different iterations, which included different melodies and production, before the final version was completed. Max first announced the single on February 27, 2020, with a post on Instagram, where she confirmed that producers Cirkut and RedOne, alongside songwriter Madison Love were involved with production. She later revealed the song’s release date, along with the name and single artwork on March 7.

Max stated that the song is about how it would be a better place if queens ruled the world, and likened it to her previous song “So Am I”, acknowledging that it contained a similar message about empowerment.

Madeline Rothman of MTV News stated that Max sings about “breathing fire, getting a ‘royalty high,’ and calling on men to start championing the queens”, with a strong electric guitar solo, while Jon Blistein of Rolling Stone noted the song’s “pulsing verse and a dramatic hook peppered with regal synths”, as well as comparing the song’s guitar solo to the discography of Queen.

Mike Nied of Idolator felt that the song “highlights Ava’s ability to fill dance floors across the globe”.

Writing for Uproxx, Caitlin White described the lyrics as “a subtle tribute to the power of women and a call to action for men to support the queens in their life”. Heran Mamo of Billboard praised the song’s lyrics, which compared chess moves to feminism; “In chess, the king can move one space at a time/ But queens are free to go wherever they like”.

An official visualizer video was released along with Kings & Queens Ava Max song on March 12, 2020. The visualizer depicts Max as a queen holding a glass of champagne and sword, with a royal deck of cards.

Max confirmed on the song’s release date that she already filmed the official music video, describing it as “very colorful, super fun, crazy dancing, and a big celebration”, and likened it to a rainbow. The official music video was released on March 27, and is directed by Isaac Rentz.

It depicts Max dancing in a heaven-themed throne room with a group of dancers. Max was inspired by Khaleesi from Game of Thrones, and wanted to portray an Amazonian queen surrounded by warriors. In an interview with Paper, Rentz explained the concept of the video:

We put together a list of ideas and references, royalty, heaven, spaceships, birds, chess boards — and a moodboard of styling references that felt powerful and feminine. Ava is one of my favorite artists to work with because she’s endlessly enthusiastic about the video process every step of the way.

She’ll text me at 2 AM with 100 ideas and references of the exact kind of birds she wants to hold during the verse. It’s a true collaboration, where my job is about bringing her vision to life and making sure it feels authentic and personal.

Kings & Queens Ava Max video opens with Max holding a sword between her legs as she sits on a golden throne. She then organizes a banquet, in which several dancers begin drinking champagne and eating food, before performing a dance sequence. During the pre-bridge guitar solo, the dancers wield electric axes.

Kings & Queens Ava Max Lyrics

[Chorus]
If all of the kings had their queens on the throne
We would pop champagne and raise a toast
To all of the queens who are fighting alone
Baby, you’re not dancing on your own

[Verse 1]
Can’t live without me, you wanna, but you can’t, nah-nah-nah
Think it’s funny, but honey, can’t run this show on your own
I can feel my body shake, there’s only so much I can take
I’ll show you how a real queen behaves

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, no damsel in distress, don’t need to save me
Once I start breathing fire, you can’t tame me
And you might think I’m weak without a sword
But if I had one, it’d be bigger than yours

[Chorus]
If all of the kings had their queens on the throne
We would pop champagne and raise a toast
To all of the queens who are fighting alone
Baby, you’re not dancing on your own

[Verse 2]
Disobey me, then baby, it’s off with your head
Gonna change it and make it a world you won’t forget

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, no damsel in distress, don’t need to save me
Once I start breathing fire, you can’t tame me
And you might think I’m weak without a sword
But I’m stronger than I ever was before

[Chorus]
If all of the kings had their queens on the throne
We would pop champagne and raise a toast
To all of the queens who are fighting alone
Baby, you’re not dancing on your own

[Bridge]
In chess, the king can move one space at a time
But queens are free to go wherever they like
You get too close, you’ll get a royalty high
So breathe it in to feel alive

[Chorus]
If all of the kings had their queens on the throne
We would pop champagne and raise a toast
To all of the queens who are fighting alone
Baby, you’re not dancing on your own

[Outro]
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
