Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the forthcoming PlayStation 5. Based on the Marvel Comics superhero Miles Morales, it will be the second game in the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, following Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018). It was announced at the PlayStation 5 live reveal event in June 2020. It is due to be released in Q4 2020 as a launch title.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Gameplay

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an action-adventure title that was initially reported to be “an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game.” However, Insomniac Games would later clarify that it is a standalone spin-off that continues the adventures of Marvel’s Spider-Man.

The gameplay appears to retain some elements of the original PlayStation 4 title, such as New York being the free roam area, a variety of takedowns to be utilized on enemies, and Suit Mods being available to equip. Unlike Peter, Miles is seen using powers of invisibility and bioelectricity.

The game will also include such technical improvements as “near-instantaneous fast-travel across Marvel’s New York City” and “highly-detailed character models and enhanced visuals” to take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s more powerful hardware. This had been desired since the original PlayStation 4 game; Insomniac’s solution to load New York City while webslinging through it was constrained by its heavy reliance on RAM, and the PlayStation 5’s SSD would resolve this issue.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Synopsis

The narrative continues from Marvel’s Spider-Man and its downloadable content The City That Never Sleeps, during which Miles Morales is bitten by a genetically-enhanced spider and gains powers similar to Peter Parker’s. A year after the first game and its DLC, Miles has fully integrated himself into the black and red suit as an experienced Spider-Man while defending both his new home in Harlem and the rest of New York City from a gang war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army. Parker tells Miles that he has to be like his late father and walk on the path to becoming a hero for the city of New York.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Development

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is being developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5. Sony Vice President Simon Rutter told The Telegraph that the game was “an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game”. However, Insomniac later called the project a standalone game, stating that it is “the next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe”.

It is smaller in size and scope than Spider-Man, and has been compared to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, a game that was smaller in size and scope than a mainline Uncharted title. The game will feature “a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests”, and will take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, Tempest Engine and dedicated ray tracing hardware to support haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio and real-time ray tracing effects, enhancing the player immersion experience.

With the increased processing power and inclusion of a custom solid state drive storage, the game will feature near instantaneous load times and a wide variety of enemies, visual effects, and objects within gameplay scenes. Insomniac Games also confirmed that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will feature an optional “performance mode” that will allow players to run the game at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Release

The game was announced on June 11, 2020 at the PlayStation 5 reveal event. It is due to be released in Q4 2020 alongside the release of the PlayStation 5. An issue of the Game Informer magazine reported that the game will also release alongside a remastered version of Marvel’s Spider-Man though this has yet to be confirmed by Sony or Insomniac Games directly.

Miles Morales is a prominent supporting character in Marvel’s Spider-Man, and the titular protagonist of the upcoming standalone expansion Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A fifteen-year-old teenager, he is a friend of Peter Parker and the son of police officer Jefferson Davis. Peter befriends Miles after his father’s death, introducing him to the non-profit F.E.A.S.T. shelter so he can serve as a volunteer. Miles is unaware of Peter’s secret identity as the masked vigilante Spider-Man, whom Miles idolizes. He eventually gains spider-like powers himself, which he reveals to Peter, who in turn reveals being Spider-Man. Under Peter’s guidance, Miles attempts to step up as New York City’s next superhero.

In the original game, a pre-spider bite Miles is featured as a playable character during some investigative stealth gameplay portions in the main story. In the self-titled spin-off, he is the main playable character, adopting both stealth and action gameplay mechanics similar to those of Peter’s Spider-Man. In all of his appearances, Miles is portrayed by Nadji Jeter.
